Which should you do first?

If the exterior is failing — peeling, chalking, bare weatherboard — do that first. Exterior paint is what protects the structure. Once weatherboards and joinery start deteriorating, you're into repairs that cost far more than a repaint would have.

If the exterior is sound but the inside feels tired — doing, dingy, or dated — the interior is the higher-impact move. It's also the one that shows up in a sale.

Short rule: protect the structure first, then refresh the inside.

Exterior painting

• Prep is everything: wash, scrape, sand, fill, mask, prime bare wood. Skipping any step shortens the life of the job dramatically.
• Weather rules the schedule. Paint needs dry conditions and the right temperature to cure. Spring and autumn are ideal in Auckland.
• Coastal and west-facing homes need extra protection — salt air and harsh UV break down paint faster.
• Two-storey homes often need scaffolding, which adds $2,000-$5,000 to the job.

Interior painting

• Less weather risk, but more disruption — furniture moved, rooms out of action, daily cleanup.
• Surface prep still matters: filling holes, sanding, priming stains so they don't bleed through.
• You don't need to move out. We work room by room and tidy daily.
• Colour choice matters more — it's the difference between a room feeling fresh and feeling off.

Should you do both at once?

If the budget allows, yes — one prep visit, one team, one timeline. It's also usually cheaper per job than doing them separately because we're already on site. But if you can only do one, protect the exterior first.
